Roy

Roy Mustang is a character from the Fullmetal Alchemist anime and manga series. Holding the title of the Flame Alchemist, he is a skilled State Alchemist who ambitiously strives to become the next leader of Amestris. Although he has also held the ranks of Major (in flashbacks), Lt. Colonel (episodes 3-8), and Brigadier General (episodes 45-51), Mustang holds the rank of Colonel in most of the anime and manga, and so he is referred to as such here. He is around 29-30 years old, as stated in the bonus pages of volume 4 of the manga. In the FMA Perfect Guidebook two, there is a timeline which states that Roy was born in the year 1885.

More of their past

Roy: So Master left behind his secret manuscripts after all…
Hawkeye: No. They’re not manuscripts. He said it would be a problem if his life’s research disappeared or was taken by an outsider…
Roy: How did he leave them behind?
Hawkeye: Mr. Mustang. That dream… can I entrust my back to it? Is it all right to believe in a future where everyone can live in happiness?

It would seem like Roy & Riza have been together through the worst and best times of their lives. Of course, more than focusing on the happy moments (judging by the photographs illustration from ch 053, the period between the end of the Ishval War and the beginning of the series, was a time of healing for both), the story lets us see more difficult and/or tragic moments, of course. Riza had already lost her mother when she was really young, and now she was losing his father too, which left her quite alone.
Roy was there to provide  comfort. Not pushy or flashy comfort, because Roy is a person who does not impose anything on anybody. He was there, for whatever she may need — she was free to be weak at the time, but Roy could also be a comfort to the strong girl Riza already was. Roy openly shares his dream with her at that time and she thinks, at that very same moment, that maybe she can trust herself, the future of the country and her father’s secret to that young man.
During this time, Hawkeye called Roy “Mustang-san”, quite logical since he is older and it’s polite to address him with a certain respect. This particular scene would repeat itself some years later, with their roles reversed.

1885-1907

Mr. Hawkeye: I was so immersed in my research, I couldn’t do anything for you.
Roy: Sensei!! Hawkeye-sensei!!
Mr. Hawkeye: I’m sorry, Riza… Roy… I’ll leave my daughter to you… Please… please…
Roy: Someone… Someone call a doctor!! Is there anyone here?!! Riza!!

Little we know about how Roy became an alchemy apprentice to Hawkeye’s father, but the fact remains that he must’ve seen something special in Roy. Something that made him entrust the boy not only with the secret of his ultimate alchemy, but also with his daughter. In fact, both things came hand in hand, since even though Roy couldn’t be tought that alchemy before his teacher’s demise, he somehow left it hidden within his daughter.Riza’s father hid his secert alchemy on her back, like a tatto.

Hawkeye’s father was visibly disappointed with Roy’s enlistment in the military, but he probably also knew that Roy’s motives were anything but selfish. The core of his disappointment probably resided within Roy’s naiveness to believe that the military was meant to help people, above all things.
Note that, at this time, Roy addresses Hawkeye as “Riza”. Wow.

Roy Mustang & Riza Hawkeye.

It’s difficult to deny the fact that they mean the world to each other, that the trust  between the two is unconditional. However, it’s even harder to reflect those feelings, the impression they give, in words. This is my  attempt at explaining Roy, and Riza’s and the profound nature of their relationship.
